Has anyone else caught ANIMAL PLANET’S new TV show Hillbilly Hand Fishing -?

Alright, I have to admit it, Animal Planet TV has a new show called “Hillbilly hand fishing” and I do not believe I have missed an episode yet, Judging from the phone calls I have received about hand-fishing or “noodling” since this show went on-air, I am sure there are a lot of other people watching it too.

Hand-fishing or noodling is not legal in Nebraska.  That rule has been on the books since before I have been around.  I will not pretend to know what reasoning might have been used to prohibit hand-fishing all those years ago; I would guess that hands never were listed as legal gear for capturing fish.  I do know that some folks are surprised to learn that hand-fishing is illegal.  Afterall, if someone is brave enough (or crazy enough) to stick their hands in some underwater hole in an attempt to pull out a big catfish, why not let them?  Surely hand-fishers cannot capture very many fish using just their hands?

Actually, hand-fishing or noodling for catfish, especially flathead catfish but also channel and blue catfish, can be quite effective.  Our catfish species are cavity-spawners; they like to find some hole or overhead cover where the males will establish and guard nests.  Male catfish then herd females onto the nest to spawn.  Female catfish do not spend as much time inside the cavity or on the nest as they usually depart once they are done spawning.  Males will continue to guard the nest, eggs and fry for a period of days or even weeks.  The reason noodlers can catch catfish with their hands is because they often are targeting spawning catfish inside the cavities in which they are spawning.

That also means that hand-fishers are targeting adult catfish and in most cases they are targeting the largest catfish in a body of water.  Catfish are much slower-growing in Nebraska waters than any of our other species of fish; they are definitely warm-water fish that take longer to grow in Nebraska than they do farther south.  A large adult flathead catfish could be dozens of years old.  Given the scarcity of big catfish, and the fact that it can take a long time to replace those fish if they are harvested from a population, noodling could have significant impacts on catfish populations.

It’s a five-day “camp” along the Cash River where participants learn to be comfortable moving around in muddy water, finding monster-szie catfish holes and submerging themselves into them. If that isn’t enough, then they must catch one of this gigantic fish with their bare hands or feet.

I researched youtube and found this clip and must say, this is one muscular fisherman – and I do believe his thumb (at least) was broken by this 35-pound speciment.

This also prompted me to call my son at college nad tell him to stop ordering Bojangles fried catfish – my goodness, they are ugly and nasty looking

After months of deliberation, The Walt Disney Company was able to secure a deal with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in November 1999 on Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island to build a theme park, two hotels, and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex.   Because land was so scarce in Hong Kong, 280 hectares of land was dredged to make space.  Disney planned on occupying 126 hectares of land in its initial Phase I build-out, commencing in an opening day projected for 2005/2006.  The

proposed construction would include a 400-room Disney resort hotel.  Hong Kong Disneyland’s anticipated projected attendance in its first year totaled 6 million visitors.

Based upon general Disneyland themes mixed with the cultural flavor of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland presented the city with an estimated 18,000 new jobs at opening (a projected 35,800 jobs over 20 years) and an approximate present economic value of $19 billion USD.  The $1.8 billion USD Disney venture would be supported heavily by the government from a fiduciary prospective.  The Hong Kong government’s total of $22.5 Billion not only included equity, but also a substantial portion of the project debt and $13.6 billion in land formation and infrastructure improvements.

The financial structure of the Hong Kong Disneyland deal was greatly in favor of Disney.  The project was to be financed through a 60/40 debt to equity split, with 80% of the debt covered by the Hong Kong government, and 20% of the debt covered through commercial means.  Disney would supply 43% of the equity, and the government would take an equity stake of 57% in the project.

Why do you not like florence and the machine ?

Though I wouldn’t call myself a ‘fan’, I do like two of her songs:
‘Drumming Song’ which I didn’t want to like, but it’s damn catchy!
‘Howl’ which I absolutely love.

Other than those two, all her songs sound the same to me and I couldn’t ‘connect’ with the lyrics {but I have that problem with almost every current female singer}.

But I can understand why a lot of people do like florence and the machine ~ though her music is similar to most of what’s already out there, she puts her own mark on it. And she dresses like that because she went to Art College {it makes people weird!}.
The thing that annoys me is that she pretends to be a redhead…

The West Memphis Three are the three young men who were tried and convicted of the murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas on May 5, 1993. During the trial, the prosecution put forth the idea that the only purported motive in the case was that the slayings were part of a Satanic ritual.

Damien Echols was sentenced to death, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment plus two 20-year sentences, and Jason Baldwin was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In July 2007, new forensic evidence was presented in the case, including evidence that none of the DNA collected at the crime scene matched the defendants, but did match Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of the victims, as well as a friend of Hobbs’ whom he had been with on the day of the murders. The status report jointly issued by the State and the Defense team on July 17, 2007 states, “Although most of the genetic material recovered from the scene was attributable to the victims of the offenses, some of it cannot be attributed to either the victims or the defendants.” On October 29, 2007, the defense filed a Second Amended Writ of Habeas Corpus, outlining the new evidence.

In September 2008, Judge David Burnett of the Circuit Court denied Echols’ application for a hearing on the new DNA evidence. The Arkansas Supreme Court heard oral argument on Burnett’s decision on September 30, 2010.

On November 4, 2010, the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that Burnett’s interpretation of the DNA statute was too narrow and reversed and remanded all three cases for hearings as to whether new trials should be ordered.

The Arkansas Attorney General said in June 2011 he won’t fight evidence of Juror Misconduct in the West Memphis 3 case. A new hearing regarding this and DNA evidence is set for December 5th. In July 2011, newly tested DNA evidence, including material from the crime scene, was found to not be a match to the defendants.

A surprise hearing is scheduled for today, one in which many think some or all of the West Memphis Three will be released. I’m not going into all the details surrounding this case as if you are reading this site on a regular basis, you are probably fully-versed on it and have already formed your opinions.

What is your opinion on the pittsburgh steelers?

pittsburgh steelers is my favorite team, I like pittsburgh teams, because its closest to where I live, the only bad pittsburgh team is the stinkin pirates. I still believe that they will eventually believe they will be a good team to, but what is your opinion or the pittsburgh steelers, how do you think they will do this coming season?

I think the Steelers are a solid football team with playoff potential for years to come. I just can’t Steeler fans. I put them right up there with Patriots fans. But before you get your panties in a wad let me qualify that……

I live in Southern CA. Do you know how many Steelers fans crawled out of the woodwork when they won the Super Bowl? Where were these people the year before when you guys went 10-6 and lost in the wild card game? Where were all of the “I bleed gold and black” stickers on cars then? In a place like Southern CA it gets pretty anoying to see fans of the winning team who aren’t from the winning team’s city.

If you travel to Xian China,i would like to recommend sofitel xian hotel.

I stayed at the Sofitel and it was a very good base. We were in Xi’an for two full days.
We did the following which we enjoyed very much
- terra-cotta warriors
- Ban Po museum
- shaaangxi cultural museum
- Muslim quarter
- bike ride around the city wall
- ancient street
- wild goose pagoda

I would recommend all of these. My main tip would be to make sure you only go in taxis with meters! A little research on where you are going to eat would also pay dividends as our dining experiences on the fly were a little hit and miss!

I am planning a trip to Japan on Easter. I would basically like to see Kyoto. Should I stay (with kids) in Osaka and from there do day trips to Kyoto, Nara Kobe or stay in Kyoto and do the trips from there. Any advice will be great since never been to Japan. Also what are good places to stay?

There are a few things to consider whether you wanna stay in Osaka or Kyoto :

1. have u been to Osaka/ Kyoto before

2. how old are your kids

3. how many of you are travelling. I agree totally with Philly Cheese that a stay in Kyoto is enjoyable (I spent 5 days all in Kyoto last May). Kyoto is scenic with lots of old historic Japanese stuff to explore (Shrines, Temples, Geisha stree…) and April is the cherry blossom season. However, there isn’t much ‘kid stuff’ – i mean for young kids, as mainly sight-seeing. It is best to explore the city by public transport, bike or foot. Quite a lot of walking. If your kids are too young, they may not be able to appreciate the beauty of it and could be impatient. Osaka will be a better choice with kids – there are quite a no. of places for them: Kaiyukan (one of the world’s largest aquarium & zoo), Hep Five, Jopolis (Sega amusement park)….
You may wanna stay in Osaka – take 1 day trip to Kyoto (visit Gion area, Kiyomizu-dera temple and Golden Pavillion), 1 day to Kobe (the famous Kobe steak), and Nara (0.5 days) for its famous deer garden. It all depends how many days you wanna stay. In Osaka alone, you could easily spend 3 days with kids around… hope it helps.

Although it might seem as though Chinese lanterns work by magic (a common misconception, established by the stunning way in which they float into the night), it is not so. We’ve done our science homework, and have discovered that it is in fact a handy convection current that helps them to fly away, never to be seen again, and so we thought we’d share what we’ve learnt with you. So make yourselves comfortable for today’s invaluable lesson:
• The term ‘Convection’ refers to the transfer of heat energy through the movement of a liquid (or indeed a fluid or a gas).
• In the case of Chinese lanterns, the air that comes into contact with the heat source- this being the fuel cell- expands and becomes lighter, thus rising and filling the lantern with air. As there is nowhere for the air to escape once it has risen, it is forced to take the lantern with it.
• Once the heat source is taken away-that is, the fuel cell has burnt out- the air becomes heavier and falls, thus so does the lantern.

How do chinese paper lanterns work?
Paper lanterns are made of paper pasted over wood, so they are flamable. However, the best light comes from fire.

I recommend using tea candles in your lanterns. They’re small enough that they shouldn’t burn the paper but should last long enough for your purpose.
